Thank you for the understanding - getting every manufacturer/vendor aligned is indeed quite the burden to begin with, but fortunately the new standard is picking up speed day by day, and the compatibility between vendors gets better and better (until we finally will see full compatibility between every Auracast qualified device).

Have you had a chance to try this out with the newest controller, the 3393?
Please let me know if the problem persists with this controller, so that we may initiate some tests of this.
It would also be great if you could provide the version of the galaxy ear buds pro 2 firmware you are using, in this case.

On a general note I would like to emphasize that the project is still experimental - which is also the case on the galaxy earbuds / android side - and so there could still arise issues in compatibility between different versions of different development platforms.

Hi, just wandering if there was any further achievement on this?

I'm not looking for bidirectional, but whether the CONFIG_STREAM_BIDIRECTIONAL flag is set or not I still see the same behaviour.

If I take a vanilla nrf5340_audio example, add proj.conf flags as recommended above but I see near identical behaviour to ksmith:

If I present both buds to pair, Left usually connects and is stable, Right attempts to connect but fails. I can play audio through left - connection appears stable. If Right does connect first, Left does not connect and I get a stream of errors: <wrn> audio_datapath: In I2S TX underrun condition, total: 5000. This counts up and at about 30s the audio stream to the right is lost.

If I "hide" the right bud in the case, Left connects as above and the connection is stable

If I "hide" the left bud in the case, Right connects and the audio stream is stable for between a few tens of seconds to single-digit minutes.

I'm working with SDK v2.4.1

The <Modified> shows where i have made changes to the original code. The only places <Modified> have been added are to fix Problem #1 and to print more information to console. The additional code forces the headsets to connect left before right, preventing the crash issue. If you disable the <Modified> code via the above macro, it will connect randomly left or right headset first.

Yes, our tester is using your code from the .zip. He has tried many times with no controller crash. I don't know if it is because the left bud connects first every time, so I will ask about this to make sure.

Yes, I am using version 2.4.0 of the SDK. I moved the install to a different directory but it is an install from the nRF Connect application, automatic install. My zephyr-sdk is version 0.16.0

Have you tried using the supplied project zip file in the original post? You also need to make sure the headset connects right first then left to see the crash. It happens nearly every time.

Problem #3:

We still haven't been able to reproduce the crash, so we need some more help from you. In addition to the crash problem

About problem #1:

Our tester is back in office and has tried to replicate the crash. He has not been able to do this though.

We want to be sure that his environment is the same as yours. Could you please check that the correct toolchain is chosen when you are building your project? For NCS v2.3.0 this should be located in ncs/toolchains/v2.3.0 if you have an automatic install and the zephyr-sdk version should be 0.15.2.

For problem #2:

Our tester has not seen the disconnection happen.

Now to problem #3:

Samsung earbuds will not work without MCS in the gateway. MCS with bidirectional mode is not supported by our solution now.

Something to look out for is that if you pause the stream before the earbuds are disconnected, the state of the stream will be different from the expectations of the connection. After reconnection the earbuds will request the streams to play, but the gateway will only know how to enable.

Our main tester had some time to prepare modifications you can use to test:

I'm still investigating but I tested your config, which is mostly the same as what I was testing, except that CONFIG_WALKIE_TALKIE_DEMO is enabled (MCS MCC enabled effectively) in my configuration. I did not see a crash with CONFIG_WALKIE_TALKIE_DEMO disabled (your config). However, your config seems to connect to the right quickly then hangs on ACL connections to the left. Infrequently it will connect to the left.

Enable CONFIG_WALKIE_TALKIE_DEMO and the controller will crash.

On a similar note: we would like to uniquely connect to headsets, not just any headset named "Galaxy Buds2 Pro". I have added filtering into the code but unfortunately only the right headset is filterable. The left headset public address is never found. The left headset always advertises random addresses. So to sum it up, I can connect uniquely to a headset but it can only uniquely connect to the right headset first, which is a problem because of the right before left crash issue.

Yes sorry about that. I am not using bonding at all. The info provided was just the results that I receive when trying to bond.

I had a discussion with our primary tester of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and he said he was able to run the gateway with the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro as the headset devices in the bidirectional configuration 'out of the box' without issue.
He specified that he made these changes to the prj.conf of the default nRF5340 LE Audio reference application from the nRF Connect SDK v2.4.0:

Could you give this a try and see if you are able to see the same results?
Please also make sure that you are using the R510XXU0AWA5 software version on the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro as well.

Could you also elaborate on how you specifically test to connect the right earbud first?
I note from your earlier comment that you ask if we have any insight on how to achieve this, but to us it seems that both earbuds needs to be removed from their case before the connections will be initiated, and so we have not been able to force the connection to start with the right earbud in our attempts to replicate the behavior you describe. From our tests it seems that the only way to note this is to first connect to one of the earbud, then pull for the earbuds location, which you also note.

In regards to Problem#3 it is a known issue to us that bonding with the earbuds are causing issues, which is why we have turned this off in our tests currently. I understand that you also had this disabled initially, but some later comments seem to indicate that you are using bonding in your testing - is your current project depending on being able to bond with the Galaxy Buds Pro 2, or was this done primarily as part of functional testing?

Lastly, I was unfortunately wrong in my previous comment about our primary tester's availability next week - he will be out of office for the entire duration of next week as well, and thus unable to test until Monday 3rd July at the earliest.
I have written an email to Michael Knight about this along with my suggestions for how we should proceed with the debugging in the case that you are not able to have this working as expected (without bonding, and without controller crashes) with the approach mentioned above. I have also asked my colleague Maria to follow up on your ticket while I am out of office for the next three weeks.

Unfortunately our primary tester of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are out of office this week, and will not be back until Monday the 26th of June.
We will update you here once we have gotten a chance to run the bidirectional tests of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro for ourselves, and see if we can identify the root causes of the issues that you describe here.

I thought I should mention that we are targeting a new controller release towards the end of June, so that should be right around the corner. The new controller contains fixes for some issues that sounds similar to the issues you describe here, but since it is not an exact match of the description it is too soon to say whether it will improve the situation in this case.

For the bonding issue, it looks like if you keep the left headset in the case then bond with the right headset only, you can reboot the processor and it at least attempts to connect to the right headset repeatably. Once the left is bonded though, it won't connect to either headset.

This also works the other way around. If you keep the right headset in the case then only bond to the left, it attempts to connect.

Interestingly, if you set CONFIG_BT_MAX_PAIRED=3, then it will attempt to connect as well. It seems once the bonds are full it doesn't even try to scan.

One other note on Problem #1.

I saw a strange behavior on the right headset when connecting first. If you connect to the right headset, you can configure sink and then source, then ONLY start the right source and both the sink + source audio works. This behavior is not true for the left headset, configuring sink will enable sink audio, likewise for source.

I haven't spent as much time testing without mic audio as it is needed for our project. I did a quick test and it looks like left connects, but right fails to connect. Some times it looks like it is going through successfully and then it gets a -22 on bt_bap_stream_qos. I haven't spent that as much time with this case though.

Note:

This is minor but if you start audio system twice in a row, you get a crash.

Response Problem #2:

Interesting, adding the delay between establishment of the two CISs may help explain why I had to put the start of the right headset connection a bit later in the connection sequence. It effectively adds a delay.

I am using the settings ya'll provided except that I tend to see a bit better connection reliability with 2x the ACL connection interval, 90 ms. Both work, but I tend to see the left make a successful connection, then fail starting into the right connection more often with 45 ms. This still happens with 90 ms connection, but seemingly less frequently.

Response Problem #3

I have bonding turned off. The first time connecting works but as soon as there is a disconnect, reboot etc. using the stored bond never connects to the device. This is another issue. It finds 2 public addresses but never connects.

Related to the bonding issue, I have added a key filter since bonding does not work. What I have found though is that it only successfully filter connects to 1 of the two public keys. And, it only connects to the right headset first. After that, I have added CONFIG_BT_PRIVACY and it successfully finds the random address of the other headset.

The problem though is that we cannot connect to the right headset first because of the controller crash issue so we currently do not have a way to connect to a specific headset vs. all headsets with the name "Galaxy Buds2 Pro". If you have any suggestions for how to uniquely identify a Galaxy headset, i'd appreciate it. We haven't come up with a solution yet.

For the 50% issue, the failure mode is that the connection is successful but if I print some of the data bytes from the stream, they are all 0s. The data to be receiving but the data is empty. I print the data in audio_datapath_i2s_blk_complete. I also tried playing the tone generation over the mic data and could successfully hear the tone generated.

Also, every time it happens, I get a lot of underrun conditions.

The ACL connection is terminated when putting back in the case.

Weird... I haven't been able to replicate the issue on the demo app I sent you yet. I tested before sending in the original post and saw it but can't replicate now, will test more tomorrow.

We have not yet performed any tests with the Galaxy buds pro 2 since the nRF Connect SDK v2.4 release, but we will schedule some next week to take a closer look at the issues you have reported here. We have not yet tested using bidirectional streams with the galaxy buds pro 2 before. Does everything work as expected when you run the same test without the CONFIG_STREAM_BIDIRECTIONAL set?

Regarding Problem #1:
This behavior was indeed a known issue with the 3330 controller, but it was resolved before the v3349 release, so this is a very interesting report.
I will need to discuss this some more with the team, and we will test this specifically next week.

Regarding Problem #2:
When we tested with the Galaxy buds pro 2 before we found that we had to make these modifications to our gateway device to have the most stable connection to the Galaxy buds pro 2:
- The presentation delay must be set to 40 ms
- The ACL connection interval should be 45 ms
- The maximum number of retransmissions we should use is 2
- There should be a small delay between the establishment of the two CISs

Please make sure that you are using these configuration in your test, and see if that improves the stability of the connection.

Regarding Problem #3:
During our last round of testing with the Galaxy Buds Pro 2 we saw that there was some issue with the bonding to the earbuds, which perhaps could be related to what you are seeing here.
Is the ACL to the earbuds terminated when they are put in the case?
You mention that it works 50% of the time, could you elaborate on the behavior on the other 50% of the time when it is not working?
It would also be great if you could capture a sniffer trace of these two scenarios (just of the link establishments, not of the ISO parts), so that I could check if there any indication of what goes wrong when it does.

Again I would like to thank you for the detailed report, and I will keep you updated on any news from our own testing of the Galaxy Buds Pro 2 next week :)
