I now know that if I want to enable DFU, I have to follow the steps in the buildprog script.

According to the documents you provided, I also found the correct .hex file.

I had a chat with our Audio team and they had the following to say

There is unfortunately no other way than the script that is directly supported, no, but you could potentially use the steps in the buildprog script to implement this as part of your own process, if that is what you are after.
as mentioned in the documentation there are several things that goes into adding DFU to the application - one of which is to append an overlay file for the intended DFU type, as well as to add the necessary bootloaders + configurations to the application.
Which .hex files did you try to use, and how did you proceed to attempt the DFU with them?
