I am a beginner in the Nordic/firmware world doing research using the nRF52832 chip and we want to be able to program it through the Arduino IDE. We've ran all our tests with code through Arduino and onto an Adafruit nRF52 Feather, so we would

RE: Issue with flashing custom board with Adafruit bootloader

Hello,

I haven't tried Nordic boards using Arduino IDEs, and we don't officially support that either. So there are some limitations for me in answering this. And I am also not familiar with the Adafruit bootloader you flashed or used for your project.
I have tried to flash the bootloader both through the nRF52 DK via command line tools as explained in the resources above, and also through the Arduino IDE over USB.
Both the resources/old tickets you pointed out are based on our old SDK (no new development on this), where you need to flash the bootloader separately. But since you are about to start your project or application, I recommend you follow our new nRF Connect SDK, which is based on Zephyr RTOS. There is a beginners guide for the new SDK, which you can follow. When it comes to the nRF Connect SDK, you don't need to flash the bootloader or softdevice separately.
My current thought: Do I need to flash a SoftDevice first? I'm a beginner like I said and I'm not sure what this is.
Yes, you need to if you are planning for a development based on the nRF5 SDK. Actually, softdevice is the name of the Nordic Bluetooth protocol stack. You can read more on this here. Once again, I don't recommend using the nRF5 SDK as it is quite old and in a maintenance-only state.

Kind Regards,
