It seems this option is best for me:

Building in command prompt
Open "Toolchain manager" from "NRF Connect for Desktop": "Open command prompt" from "NRF Connect SDK 2.4.2"

Now west is launched correctly from command line without any extra tricks.

Hello,

I believe you need to the add the path to a west directory. The easiest way might be to open a new nRF Terminal from VSC, or a cmd/bash terminal from the Toolchain Manager using the drop-down menu of the NCS version you want.
