&lt;p&gt;The board is configured in Normal Voltage Mode when VDDH is shorted to VDD. This will disable the REG0 regulator stage and instead feed the input voltage on VDD/VDDH straight to the second regulator stage REG1. In High Voltage Mode VDD acts as a output not input as in Normal Voltage Mode, which means you can use it to supply external modules.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What is the internal load capacitance of the crystal that you&amp;#39;re using, and what is the size of the parallel load capacitors that you have matched the crystal with?&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;if you&amp;#39;re using a 3V0 battery and you&amp;#39;re not going to source external components from the nRF52840, then I would recommend using &lt;a href="https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ps_nrf52840/recommended_op_conditions.html?cp=5_0_0_7"&gt;Normal voltage mode&lt;/a&gt;, since 3V0 is within the operating region.&lt;/p&gt;
