We have observed high power usage on our custom board's when using openthread and decided to measure the low power variant of the OpenThread CLI sample on the nRF Connect SDK version 2.3.0.

I built for secure (nrf5340dk_nrf5340_cpuapp). If you are building for nonsecure then your current spikes could be related to TFM logging. You can disable TFM logging by setting CONFIG_TFM_LOG_LEVEL_SILENCE=y.

I ran some tests on Monday and also today. On Monday I saw around 4-5 uA sleep current when testing with nRF Connect SDK v2.3.0 and v2.4.2, but today with SSED and v2.5.0 I see around 2 uA sleep current and around 21 uA average consumption.

I see that you have a lot of small spikes during sleep in your measurement. It could be due to noise affecting the measurement.

Please try with the setup above and see if you still get the small spikes.

I have also attached my log from the Power Profiler so you can compare.

In our previous test we measured the DUT in source meter mode, where vdd was supplied directly from the PPK2, the secondary DK was only used to connect uart to the PC .How can we measure in source meter mode with usb connected?

We tried following the instructions in the blog post for SSED but we got a similar sleep base current ~45uA (see attached image)

We've also seen similar results on our custom board. Do you know if the nRF53DK using an openthread example has had any power consumption tests by nordic? If so, would it be possible to share the test set up used so we can try to replicate it?

RE: High Power Consumption Openthread CLI Sample

Hi,
Our testing show an average current of approximately 58uA, in contrast to Nordic's 2.9uA
Please note that 2.9 uA is not the average total power consumption, but the average sleep current, and the 2.9 uA number is for the nRF52840 DK.
However, your sleep current is still very high with more than 40 uA. I would expect it to be more around 4-5 uA on the nRF5340 DK.

Do you see the same power consumption if you connect the DUT directly to the PC with USB instead of via a secondary DK?

Please also check out this blog post Analyzing power consumption in Thread Sleepy End Devices and try the steps there.
