Thanks Lincoln for looking into this further. I'm certain that there was one device in the group as I had just created the group and assigned the device to it expressly to do the FOTA. The group still exists and still has the device in it. I agree that the error reported is likely due to there being no device left in the upgrade since the summary list of upgrades shows 0/0. However, I suspect the device was dropped from the upgrade for some reason which resulted in there being no devices left in the upgrade. Just why the device was 'dropped' I can't say. Perhaps something about the device was deemed incompatible with the upgrade being requested?

Anyway, probably little point investigating this further as the problem seems to have gone away after I rebuilt (in a different way) and reprogrammed the starting version of the FOTA upgrade. I could try to reproduce it again if that's of any value. But I'm happy to just let this go.

One way you can get into that state is if the group you've defined for a FOTA job no longer has any devices in it. For example, you can delete devices from a group after creating (but not starting) a FOTA job. We will change the error message to say something like “No devices in the group <groupname>, therefore no updates to apply.” Could this be what happened to you?

We haven't found out anything else in our records for your FOTA jobs that explain what happened.

Hi Charlie,

After successfully upgrading a different device (AX720), I had another attempt at upgrading the original device (AX700) which failed again with the same internal failure message (see attached screenshot). I then reprogrammed the firmware of AX700 using the Programmer tool instead of VSCode. This time the firmware upgrade via nRF Cloud succeeded.

I still believe there is a fault of some kind with nRF Cloud, as it should never be reporting an 'internal failure' for any reason. Presumably there's a server log detailing the exact cause. I have a thought as to what might be partly responsible for this... I can see from the Firmware Updates screen that the update is shown as 0/0 successful devices. Is it possible that something led to the one and only device not being accepted, then the update contained zero devices, leading to an internal server error? Of course this doesn't explain why the server had a problem with the original firmware of AX700.

So this problem appears to be only impacting my development unit (not devices in the field), and then probably something about how it got programmed in VSCode. While I have previously used VSCode to program all other devices, this time I was pulling up an older version to test the upgrade. Perhaps I did something wrong when setting it up in VSCode. Anyway, I don't think there's anything further to investigate from my point of view. You may still want to catch whatever was causing the internal error though.

FWIW... My devices are customer hardware/firmware running on nRF9160 SICA B1 using SDK 2.3.0. All tools are updated to the latest.

Hi Charlie,

An hour or so ago I decided to have a go again but with a different device. I used the same bundle but created another group with the second device in it. I then created and deployed an update and it worked correctly. I'll have another go with the original device tomorrow. Either the problem was specific to that one device or the server problem went away over the few hours since I last tried it. I'll let you know what I find.

Could you provide more details about your test with deploying FOTA? Like the sample you are trying, version, HW, and logs.

Did you play with Cellular: nRF Cloud REST FOTA — nRF Connect SDK 2.5.0 documentation (nordicsemi.com) successfully?

I did a quick try with this sample and it work as expected, here is the log, you can see the App version changed from 1.0.0 to v1.0.0-FOTA-TEST.
