That is great that you figured out the difference is in VSC Extension and not in the SDK itself.

I think this partly documentation missing part.

I see that for the missing line feed I see in the changelog mentions about the linefeed already

I can request the VSC Extension team to add the documentation in changelog for release notes about the change of color aswell.

I've found a way to reproduce the old format. To do this, change the version of 'nRF Connect for VS Code' to the previous version, v2023.10.49. Install it by going to the Extension tab -> nRF Connect for VS Code -> Uninstall -> Install another version and selecting v2023.10.49. The symptoms of this ticket occured because VS Code's extensions automatically update. The first image below is the 'nRF Connect for VS Code' screen after rolling back to v2023.10.49, and the second shows the build output colored, with all C code compilation outputs visible due to linefeed after rolling back.

I find the content of your explanation very confusing. Is this a correct summary of what you are saying?

The 'build message' format appears on your end in the same way as it does on ours. (That is, it appears without color processing and without linefeeds).
You do not remember how the old format was (where color processing was applied and linefeeds were included, ensuring that compile messages of all source code files were not erased and remained)

My colleague thinks that he saw something in red aswell but never said he can reproduce it. Apologies if I was not clear.

I am unable to see what old format exactly is, apart from your highlights that the fonts and color were different, I could not find a way to reproduce it. Not sure if the change came from our end or Zephyr end but I even tried to compile NCSv1.9.1 and still no luck.

The toolchain team does not seem to do anything that have caused this changed. So they are very eager to reproduce aswell without any luck so far.

First, I'm not quite sure what you mean. In your previous reply, you mentioned that one of your colleagues had confirmed that the symptom was reproducible. Is that not the case? Let me briefly summarize my situation again:

Previously:

Certain messages (like errors) were displayed in red.
The compilation output for each source code was processed with linefeeds, allowing all compilation messages to be visible.

Currently:

All messages are displayed in white without any color processing.
The compilation output for each source code is processed with carriage returns (CR) instead of linefeeds, showing only the final result.
This symptom has occurred on all four of our computers since the time I started asking this question.
We have not made any updates to the SDK.
I am unable to identify what is causing this condition (in other words, I don't know how to reproduce it).
We can no longer output build messages in the old format.

We are not able to reproduce those format where we see anything different anymore between different revisions and toolchains. So not sure how to narrow things down on what has changed. If you can show us the difference in text format and the way to reproduce it, then please let me know and I can continue my investigation.

As seen in the image above, when executing a build from the command line instead of vscode, the output is displayed without linefeeds, and areas that were previously marked in red are now shown in white text. In other words, the output differs from the past both when run in vscode and when executed from the command line.

Sorry for the late reply, Yes, if the symptoms is to see differences in colors and line feed, I do not see it on my end on VScode testing on NCSv2.5.0

If you are seeing differences in VSC output, then it is possible something with your Visual Studio code extensions might have changed. If you are testing this on the command line and if you still see the differences between older and newer SDK, then we can know that the difference you see is in the SDK and not any changes in IDE. Changes in IDE are not part of the SDK release.

If there are changes in the output without any modifications made by the user, it's natural for the user to be concerned. Moreover, if there are changes in the SDK or other aspects despite not updating, it becomes difficult to assure what changes might occur at which point in the final output image.

Although less critical, the absence of color in error messages reduces their distinctiveness, making it hard to see this as a positive change. Despite this, the presence of such unintended changes suggests that there might be a problem with the development environment I am using.

Building peripheral_uart on v2.5.0 and v2.3.0 with VSC v2023.11.301

I see no difference in colors and line feed. I am not sure why you see a difference in this without updating the SDK/toolchain or VSC.

Can you tell me why it is so important for you to know the differences in these build output text formats?

I am not using a separate serial emulator. I am using the VCOM provided through the nrf connect for vs code extension in vs code.

Is the nRF Connect SDK not installed on your computer? Rather than relying on your memory or checking the status on devzone, you could just do a pristine build on your computer to immediately see if the issue can be reproduced. As I mentioned before, suddenly, a few days ago, we started experiencing the same issue on multiple computers on our side.

Those highlighted stuff are only remarks and there is no functionality within. The team will try to make those remarks simpler and consistent and as of now, it should not affect you anything as there is no added functionality to those remarks.

I am not sure if this occurred as I did not pay that close attention to the format change of the serial log output. If you have not changed anything with the NCS revision then it should not change the format. Which serial emulator are you using to observe these logs (putty/teraterm)?, Could this be related to those serial emulator settings? I have tried to find other similar issues in devzone and could not find anyone seeing this.

Not sure myself as I do not see those on my build. All I see is the "user setting" at my end. what from build and newest means here. I need to ask this internally and see if I can get a hold to some documentation or explanation. Will be back to you when I have some info on this.

I'm not sure what you mean by being able to manually set something among what you said. I created the workspace using the 'Create a new application - copy a sample' method. Before building, both 'Manage toolchains v2.5.0' and 'Manage SDKs v2.5.0' were marked as (newest), but after the build, the message next to 'Manage SDKs v2.5.0' changes to (from build).

Is this normal?
I would appreciate it if you could provide an explanation or a link to a document about the messages in the brackets (newest, from build, etc.)

For now, it's not causing any problems. However, I'm concerned about whether this is a normal situation. Do you not experience this symptom on your side? In our case, within a few days, this same phenomenon suddenly occurred not only on my computer but also on the computers of other developers.

I have not taken any action for updating the SDK 2.5.0 since I installed it once. I have only used it for creating applications and building. Yet, is it possible for such changes to occur despite this? Are you saying that the SDK could be updated without my knowledge, even though I haven’t done anything actively for the SDK update? This is a very important aspect for the management of our future development projects, so I want to obtain clear information on this.

Regarding your question on the workspace in extension:

If you are opening files from the NCS folder directly, then that counts as a workspace and the extension will automatically use the matching NCS and toolchain versions.

If you have your applications/samples/whatever outside the NCS folder (by using the copy sample functionality for example) then you can set it up manually.

Regarding the questions on the build message formats, it seems like something have changed, but these are log messages. Does it matter how they are displayed? Unless you are automating some test using a script with these logs as inputs?

The changes in the color and formats seems to be originating from the Zephyr upstream. Hard to find the config or setting that affects this, so not sure what we can do about this apart from making your script adapt to the change!!

I have an additional question. When I look at the 'nRF Connect for VS Code' extension on my computer, next to 'Manage Toolchains v2.5.0,' it says '(newest),' and next to 'Manage SDKs v2.5.0,' it says '(from build).' However, on another computer, both of them say '(workspace settings).' I would like to know what each of these means and whether there is any problem.
