I am afraid I don't know why the file appeared gray here. It may be due to the location, or how it was copied to the phone, or some other reason. Unfortunately I have limited time for getting to the bottom of that, and the solution of using a different file browser app seems satisfactory. From my end I therefore consider the case closed.

Regards,
Terje

RE: nRF Connect Mobil, can see but cannot load custom UUID definitions

Well there you have it. The way I was doing this is that my development folders/files are in DropBox. When I created the definitions file and opened nRF Connect, there was the DropBox option on the left as you said. It was nice and easy to get to the definitions file that way but as we have seen, it didn't show as loadable.

For other uses, there is also a files app on the phone (Samsung Galaxy 23) that supports network access. I had created a XFER folder on a drive on my network that I use to transfer files from one place to another since everything on my network can see that folder.

So what I have to do now is to create the definitions file in my DropBox area and then load it to the server that has the XFER folder on it. Then I have to open the file app on the phone and move the file from the XFER folder to the internal storage DOWNLOAD folder.

Now I can use nRF Connect and browse using the file app to the DOWNLOAD file to get and load the definitions file because for some reason, that files app can't use the network option when it is supporting nRF. It did work but what a hassle.

My question now is why did YOU have that trouble with my definitions file?

RE: nRF Connect Mobil, can see but cannot load custom UUID definitions

The file browser app is independent from nRF Connect for Mobile. nRF Connect requests opening any file browser and gives the mime type it wants. Then it's up the file browser to allow/disallow files.

From Android 4.4 there is a native file browser app on Android, which also allows opening other file browser apps downloaded from the store, like Drive or Total Commander, etc. This native file browser depends on the phone manufacturer. Pixel phones have one, Samsung different one, etc. Some may, some don't support given mime types.

If the app that your using doesn't allow selecting the file, try a different one. In the left menu select something else, you may also download from Play Store.

RE: nRF Connect Mobil, can see but cannot load custom UUID definitions

Thanks very much. At least I know I'm not crazy. :)

RE: nRF Connect Mobil, can see but cannot load custom UUID definitions

Hi,

Thank you for sharing.

I have investigated the file, and I cannot see anything wrong with it. I do reproduce the same behavior of the file being grayed out and not possible to select for importing into nRF Connect for Android.

I have given it to our Android team for further investigation, and I (or someone from the team) will get back to you when we know more.

May the issue be that the json file is malformed? If the JSON is invalid or its contents is not right for describing UUID definitions, it cannot be loaded by the app. If you do not see any errors by manual inspection, you should easily find JSON validators or linters online, which should help highlighting if anything is wrong with the JSON file itself.
