 As per the Thread specification 1.3.0 the there are two types of Thread Link implementation as below: 
 
 As per the NRF52840 Product Specification v1.8 at-least it seems to support only TL1 i.e. IEEE 802.15.4-2006 standard.

&lt;p&gt;This is the feedback from our Thread team:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span dir="ltr"&gt;IEEE 802.15.4 standard specifies a number of acceptable PHYs, including O-QPSK PHY in 2450MHz band with 250kb/s data rate, which is present both in 2006, 2015 and the latest, 2020 version of the standard. The nRF52840 supports this PHY. Therefore it&amp;#39;s compatible with all versions of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard that specify this PHY, and to my knowledge all existing revisions do. The same reasoning follows for other Nordic SoCs that contain a &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Wireless/Thread"&gt;802.15.4-capable radio&lt;/a&gt; (nRF52833, nRF5340 and nRF54L/H).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
