Our developer actually did some trials with mfw 1.3.6. Here is the reply:

I run a short iperf test and collecting traces with XMODEMTRACE=1,2 and with the below mentioned AT commands

AT%XMODEMTRACE=0

AT%XMODEMTRACE=2,,0,"0000000000000000c000f000000000"

AT%XMODEMTRACE=2,,3,"010400000000400000000000000000000000000000e001000000000000000000000000"

AT%XMODEMTRACE=2,,4,"06"

The recorded binary log file size reduced from 2.6MB → 550kB

The first AT%XMODEMTRACE=0 will disable all traces, then the next three will enable a few trace groups, buffers and peer buffer traces.

The pcaps created with the XMODEMTRACE=1,2 and with the above bitmaps looked the same, so I’m hoping this could be a good set.

The produced binary log (we use the strc format) is still 2x bigger than the produced pcap file, because there are some unneeded traces which we unfortunately cannot deactivate.

Could you give a try with MFW v1.3.6?

Sorry my message was not clear.
I could not see any IP traffic at all.
I could see the AT events in the logs the first time I issued the commands, but it only worked once. AT events are not present in the logs any more, even after I reboot the modem and issues the AT%XMODEMTRACE again.

Hi Yannick,

It is a bit confusing. Could you try to clarify a bit more on my below questions?

Do you mean you can see IP traffic when running the AT%XMODEMTRACE commands only after the power is on, but the configuration will not survive power reset? If this is true, could you run AT+CFUN=0 before power reset?

Or do you never see IP traffic at all?

I tried the new commands you gave me but I am sorry that it did not enabled the IP traffic.
The AT commands have been added after the first time I issued the AT%XMODEMTRACE but not on the following attempts.
(I do the configuration commands at start up, it worked one for the AT but not after the consecutive reboots).

Hello Charlie !
I have been able to successfully test the commands you gave me.
It works really great to reduce the size of the modem logs, so thank you very much.
The configuration is almost perfect but I would also like to have the IP traffic and the AT commands in the modem logs.
Would it be possible to have a new set of command to have almost the same configuration but that would add IP traffic and AT command to the modem logs ?

And to answer your first question : yes, we redirect modem trace to an external flash to be able to analyse them at the end of our roaming tests.

Could you try the following configurations? It figures out this bit_map configuration is heavily related to our modem source codes. We are not able to provide more details to explain the configuration. Our modem team provides the bit_maps configuration according to your request now.

Could you further explain why you are limited in the amount of data you can collect? Do you use flash as modem trace backend?

As I have no coredump and as I am not using GNSS, %XMODEMTRACE=1,5 and %XMODEMTRACE=1,2 give me the same amount of data which is very large (1.5MB for 5 minutes of operation) but when I export the collected trace to pcapng format using nrfutil trace lte the results is only a few kB.

Could you forward my question to the modem team that can advise on the use of <bitmap_id> and <bitmap> fields to configure which data is collected ? If would be very helpful for me to be able to reduce the amont of collected traces.

Sorry, there is no documentation available on these. Sometimes, the modem team might ask customers to use a specific bitmap to get some extra traces.

Have you tried set 5, as in %XMODEMTRACE=1,5 ? This might be closer to what you are looking for. Does it provide you the information you are seeking?
