How about how https://github.com/nrfconnect/ncs-example-application adds out of three drivers?
I think that method should work for a freestanding app.

The device driver example is not compatible with nRF9160DK (due to TF-M). Also, the example application is a workspace, which is completely different that all of the Academy lessons (which use freestanding app).

Im looking for a way to add a sensor driver (I2C) to a freestanding app.
