I did a quick search through the DevZone history and this is not an issue that's been reported here before, but I can leave the case open if someone in the community has had the same issue.

A potential reason as to why it takes longer the first time is because the backend has to check the full FS the first time around and indeed caching the data somewhere for subsequent calls.
