My sincere apologies for taking your time.

I totally misunderstood instructions I got for this development.

Thank you very much for helping me figure this out. I'm new to this field and so learning.

I'll get in touch with Anthony Oliveri, the sales engineer who contacted me about this case, and let him know were all good.

I have ordered an nRF52840 DK for other IOT applications I have

The nRF52840-DK we provide also include an interface MCU that can be used for programming and debugging, ref it's user guide:
https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_nrf52840_dk/UG/dk/if_mcu.html

For the DK you have it may look like there is no interface MCU that can be used for programming and debugging, likely it's pre-programmed with firmware that allow AT commands developed by Globalstar to use their module, ref their quick start guide:
https://ba6839db-e1e9-457a-87bd-14abd0827fdf.usrfiles.com/ugd/ba6839_cc448b5a7ebe49e181640befc7f9e533.pdf?ST150M-Dev-Kit-Quick-Start-Guide

So the DK you have is for specific use case, if you want to develop generic products and run the devacademy tutorial you should order yourself an nRF52840-DK, for instance from:
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-DK/8593726

I still could not see the board in the "connected devices" fiel in Visual Studio code. I then tried completly uninstalling the JLink application from the computer and re ran the instillition., making sure I selected run as administrator. I stll can't see the board.

Additionally, I now can't terminal into the board with Putty, or a terminal session in Visual Studio, as I could before. I moved the board to another computer, that doesn't have any of the Nordic, Segger, or Visual Studio app's and I could terminal into the board as before.

I take it that the Segger JLink app is the serial access from the SDK/IDE Application to the board.

I believe this issue is caused by an incorrect JLink USB driver install.

Begin by downloading JLink from this link: https://www.segger.com/downloads/jlink/

During installation, select "Install legacy USB Driver for J-Link" and "Update existing installation."

Close VScode and open it again after this installation and you should be able to program the devkit.
