Yes, you can add board specific overlays or Kconfig files in your child image folder as explained in the linked documentation.

The overlay file in fact did help, but is there any way to not automatically include this overlay file in non-dk builds?

Hi,

Adding the following two files to your child image folder should fix this:

These will enable the QSPI flash in the bootloader so it can access the secondary slot from the external flash.
