I just did a video on this very thing, Here.

It's the Nrf52840DK and the Xiao Nrf52840 BLE sense version in the Expansion board with a SWD connection using the onboard JLink between the two. Watch closely and don't make stuff overly complicated it works great. this is a Version 3.0.2 DK board btw.

so you checked this: https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_nrf52832_dk/UG/dk/ext_programming_support_P20.html and have all the signals hooked up?

So I have wired all the cables as shown in the picture. The manual has not yet led me to an alternative solution.

So you have not wired all the wires and that is probably causing the problems. Check out the nRF52 DK user guide (the nRF52840 DK user guide is not updated yet) and connect all the wires listed.

You are absolutely right, the connection is incorrect. Here is the corrected version. I have now made the ground connection blue so that you can see it better. However, this wiring still does not work.

You are connecting these wrong: The 2 connectors that I have highlighted in purple are:

Top: Vbat-

Bottom: Vbat+

But you are connecting bottom (Vbat+) with the GND.

Also make sure the GND connection on the DK side is correct (it is not visible to me).

The 'optional' part was a mistake. I have attached a picture of my setup. I hope it helps. I have already tried various combinations of connections, but none of them have worked so far. I have also tried the yellow-marked connection between VDDnRF and SWD SEL. I am powering the board through the VDD pin and not externally.

Why you have labeled optional with the VDD connection?

Are you powering your device from external source?

Maybe adding a picture of your whole setup would explain more.

Nonetheless, here is a ticket regarding the programming of external board using nrf52840DK.
