I think based on the feedback I have gotten that just checking the slave address is the safest route. As for why there is no WHOAMI I'm not sure

Of our product. We might use different PMICs.

I agree that it is technically possible to just rely on the I2C address, but most of the I2C devices I used so far have a WHOAMI register which is always used at initialization to be sure the installed device is what one thinks it is. I'm surprised by the absence of this on the npm1300, that's all.

Let me know if you figure out the thing about the manufacturing bits.

Just for clarification. When you mentioned

This refers to different version of your product, or does it refer to different versions of the npm1300?

Update:

The feedback I got was that you can only communicate with the npm1300 if you use the correct slave address 110 1011. Performing any I2C read/write using this 7 bit slave address, and receiving the ACK means there is an npm1300 connected to the I2C interface. Still checking if there is a way to combine this with any of manufacturing lot bits

Thank you. If the 9 bytes in the example you provided are the manufacturing lot, they might change depending on the lot (change in the future). What part of those bytes is guaranteed to be the same?
