Hi Simon,

Your trace file cannot be opened in Cellular Monitor or converted to pcap. It seems that the file got corrupted or was not uploaded properly. Can you take new modem trace and upload it? Please verify that it can be opened in the Cellular Monitor before uploading.

yes all code works fine on nrf9160dk and nrf9161dk all in non Secure. I can confirm this because I’m able to reach onomondo and i'm connected to LTE. But the same code doesn’t work on my custom board build with nrf9161 in non secure also.

ok understood but why my file size is 7.5MB what is inside? I don’t try with dk board; It's look like cellular monitor can't send AT command over uart1

Hi Simon,

Are you still not able to make the connection or did you do something to your kit? Is this a different problem or is it the same you had two months ago?

All code is running as expected, how are you confirming this?

So the mtrace file states that there's nothing captured in it. Was this tried with your custom board? Are you able to capture somethign successfully with one of our DKs and your code?

Sorry it's a typo error, I'm using usbserial-0001 for capturing data without success, trace;raw is always empty.

usbserial-001 is where the uart1 is connected, but you usbserial-0002 as input for capturing the trace? Is this a typo is there something I'm not seeing there? What happens if you use usbserial0001 for the trace capture command?

The radio part of the design schematic looks as the connector we have used on the nRF91xx-DK. Do you have some sort of spectrum analyzer available to verify the output from the cable once connected to the J1 connector? The flex antenna you are using, does that work with the DK you have available with the nRF9160?

Hi Simon,

regarding the capturing of the trace. You have to cpature it to a file and open it.

The antenna connection, are you able to see TX operation from your board with a spectrum analyser? Again, I don't know what the HW looks like, but the antenna connection is definitely something to follow. I suspect the receiver on the nRF91 on your custom board is able to receive singals from the network, but the outgoing connection request and TX operations are not getting through back to the network. Placement of the antenna and location of the kit compared to windows and obstacles is worth testing out.

on my custom board I use flex LTE antenna this one. I don't understand why I never find network, because if I run AT+COPS=? I find networks for my region...

Yes with nrfDK board I don't have any problem, my source code work fine, I'm connected and it's working well.

What do you think about my trace modem? Why I can't get them, yet I can see data passed to my serial terminal uart1.

If I follow all steps I got an error when I send the command AT+CGACT=1,1, I got ERROR as return on my serial temrinal, and I also have thise command AT+CEREG? return to me something like that +CEREG: 5,2,"E29D","09891B07",7, onomondo says returning of this command should be +CEREG: x,5.

This seems to indicate that you never find a network either and it leads back to the question about board, HW and antenna. What sort of antenna are you using and are you sure it is setup correctly for your custom board?

With the nRF9160 DK, if you follow the SoftSIM example, do you then get the +CEREG: x,5 response?

Unfortunately no I only have softsim.

But if I'm tying to connect to the same uart1 with Cellular monitor I always got "Tried to send AT command to device, but no serial port is open". I don't understand why, because if I send AT command from serial monitor to uart0 it's working, how cellular monitor know where he should send AT command ?

Here is my list device :

First CP2102 -> uart1 trace modem (use with celullar monitor)

Second CP2102 -> uart0 where I print with LOG_INF for example or printk (used with serial monitor)

nRF9160DK -> the board used to flash my custom board

Trace functionality could now be interferring with each other from the modem trace and application UART traffic if they are both requesting the same UART0 for data exchange.

The trace feature and output from the modem would be great, but I don't have one of the Onomondo boards here to help me debug and I'm not sure if that's helping in this case right now.

If we go back to something that works for your Onomondo board:

1 Just a simple FW that runs the application UART, no modem activity or anything. Are you able to get that going?
2 If yes on the previous, if you add an AT client version and send AT commands directly to the modem, this is where you start seeing issues. Are you able to set up the modem test features or anything that doens't require SIM and at least get the replies back from the modem?
3 You were initially following some of the steps from the Onomondo website: https://onomondo.com/blog/test-modem-connectivity-with-at-commands/ but you have also deviated from some of the commands while attempting to establish the connectivty, what happens if you follow the steps one by one from Onomondo?
What are you connecting the board to? Base stations or test equipment? Are you actually seeing output on the antenna from the Onomondo board. (It's a basic question, I am sure you do, but it's worth asking just in case the issue might be on the actual radio output for some reason.
Is there a physical SIM card slot on the board as an alternative to softsim? Are you able to test that?

Yes that's right. But I've change the modem-trace-uart.overlay file to change uart1 to uart0, I have to use uart0 I don't have uart1 on my custom board.

Hi Simon,

there seems to be something not initialized correctly with the trace. The screen shots you have attached seems to indicate you configure the pins for uart0, i2c and spi3. Hower you use uart1 for the trace, would you be able to add the config for uart1 as well before you enable the trace. There's a difference between app trace and modem trace in the output.

In the same go, would you be able to share a file containing the print from project configurationm build log and build log from VS code?

Are you able to get some other project working on the both kit and custom board? Like for example the asset tracking example? You would have to build to versions of it. One for the 9160 and one for the 9161. Just to try a different FW and see if it starts up on both?

Are you enabling the trace in the build configuration in NCS? See the "Snippets" section of the screen shot.

With this and the UART connected to a terminal, you don't see any output on a serial terminal on either the DK nor your custom boards?

Yes one nrf9160 DK board and one custom board with nrf9161 sip (inspired by circuit dojo feather nrf9160 design)

I don’t know if I’m right but to activate the traces I only have to add the CONFIG_NRF_MODEM_LIB_TRACE, And output will come on uart? Should I do something else ? I’m using vscode and nrf plugin. My custom board look like very similar to circuit dojo feather nrf9160 (same uart pin, I2c,…) So for my uart I have the same wiring, using cp21 and USB port with pin P0.05/06 for UART on SIP.

Yes I can send AT commands to my custom board over serial monitor. So if I sent AT via UART my board return OK.

So you have one nRF9160 DK and one nRF9161 SiP on your custom board with different mfw versions.

The modem trace documention:

You were able to add the modem trace service, but how did you connect the trace output pins to the terminal? You can send AT commands directly to the modem FW, but the trace traffic raises an error? Is the error message you pasted into your previous reply the only output from the modem trace you get? Do you see or receive anything else from the modem trave interface?

Are you building the onomondo application for the right device? If it works for nRF9160 are you building a different application for the custom board that contains the nRF9161?

The Onomondo softsim_static_profil works with the nRFG9160DK, it is the same application you are trying to run?

I've had a little discussion with some others here and there was a couple of comments.

CEREG: 5,2 means "2 – Not registered, but UE is currently trying to attach or searching an operator to register to"

It looks to me that device gets deregistered from the network after the cell change.

He could try AT+CEREG=5 before AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","onomondo"

Which application is running on his board?
Are you able to compare the logs from the nRF91 on both the DK and the Onomondo board? When do they differ in output?

1. Yes my code works well on nRF9160 DK. I can reach Onomondo, I can see my sim connected. On my custom board I have an issue I think about softsim, I get only this LTE event after nothing

Hello Simon,

Your code works well when it is running on the nRF9160DK. Is it waiting for some event somewhere that is available on the kit but not on your custom board?
The are you using log or debugging the device at the same time? What sort of steps are you reading out from the log as being completed? Are you seeing error messages there?
A common challenge with new custom boards are often component and layout mismatch that compromise RF performance. Is the custom board packed into something? Are you able to share details about your custom board?
