I am completely new to Nordic eco system. What I basically want to do is make a simple bluetooth mouse using a module and the Connect SDK with the HID sample.
Now the first hurdle is how to get the firmware on the chip.
Correct, connect it to ground on the external board, ref:
https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/ug_nrf52832_dk/page/UG/dk/ext_programming_support_P19.html

I can see that it's sometimes called GND detect, other times SWD select, but should be the same.

I found all the schematics and how to connect the custom board via P20. How do I select which MCU is supposed to be programmed? Meaning how do I tell the board if it should flash the on board MCU U1 or my custom board? Is that done with the GND DETECT line?

RE: Getting started without programmer

OK thanks for the info.

RE: Getting started without programmer

You cannot use the nRF52840-DONGLE to program your BLE module.

You *can* use any of the devboards, for example nRF52-DK ('832 chip) or nRF52840-DK ('840 chip) to program your BLE module. You will need access to its SWDIO, SWCLK and GND pins. On the various Nordic DK boards there are "SWD out" pins available, which you connect to your BLE module.
