I edited my previous response, there should be two links that point to the sample description and the provisioning handler.

Hopefully someone from Nordic will see this and chime in at this point.

I have provisioned both devices on the nRF mesh app, setting up the publish addresses and subscription to the same group. However please do send over these notes you're referring to and I'll take a look in case I've missed something.

Ok, no problem, if you were perfect you would run for god. (assuming there were elections, which I doubt)
If I were perfect, I would have an answer for you.
I am going to take a look, but I have to admit I haven't played with the mesh portion of BLE. I did read about provisioning, in the notes. Have you completed all of the provisioning steps?

Apologies, I'm completely new to this and clearly all over the place!

The SDK I'm working with is 2.9.0 and the application specifically is "chat" which is found in \nrf\samples\bluetooth\mesh\chat

gee - went from can't compile, to HRS sample... and now we are in Bluetooth mesh.

This time, I will ask a specific question.

Which application specifically, the name and perhaps the directory it resides in the SDK, are you working with?
Is this 2.9.0 or 2.9.1.

Yes I have got them to build using the "chat" mesh application under SDK 2.9. The problem lies in getting them to talk to each other in the serial monitor

So, you could get them to build then?

I am pretty sure in the readme there are instructions for setting up two nordic devices to talk to each other.
Have you attempted a peripheral connect to the central?

Hi AMarch, thanks so much for your response.

I have been through the academy but have not been able to find the answers I need unfortunately. I have the two boards set up to the same group on the nRF Mesh app for android, however I can't get them to talk to each other.

At the root of your question is how to compile an example program. I suggest you take a couple of hours and run through the academy. This should allow you to get as far as building an example program.
