The error message you are seeing, Failed with exit code 1. One or more program tasks failed: * D6282772F327: [sdfu] requestPrn failed, code: OperationTimeout. Message: Failed, [sdfu] requestPrn failed., is related to a timeout during the Serial DFU (SDFU) process when using the nRF Programmer app on Ubuntu 24.04.

The error could be related to newer version of ubuntu. you can read here https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/114043/nrf-connect-sdk-v2-6-1-and-v2-7-fails-ubuntu-24-04-lts .

There is one previous case mentioned about Installing the nrf-udev rules for proper device permissions.

(+) Unable to flash hex file on nRF52840 USB Dongle using nRF Programmer tool - Nordic Q&A - Nordic DevZone - Nordic DevZone.

Besides these you can make sure if the Dongle is in DFU mode before programming. You can also try with Different USB ports/cables and reboot.

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 to run nRF programmer app on nRF connect and follow these instructions. I get the following error. I did this about a year ago with the same dongle so I'm concerned that a software update caused this. Is there a way to get past nrf util version?

As advised, I did try nRF programmer app of nRF Connect for desktop, following the above steps - and it worked.

Problem has been resolved. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,

You can try nRF porgrammer app of nRF Connect for desktop and can follow the following steps

Insert the nRF52840 Dongle into a USB port
Press the reset button to enter DFU mode (the LED should blink red)
Launch nRF Connect for Desktop and start the Programmer application
Select "Open DFU Bootloader" from the device list
Add the HEX file you have sniffer_nrf52840dongle_nrf52840_7cc811f.hex)
Click "Write" to flash the firmware

As advised, I downloaded the nrf_sniffer_for_bluetooth_le_4.1.1.zip file from the link provided and I extracted that .zip file in the C:>.nrfutil>sniffer_software> folder on my PC.

Then, I was able to locate the required .hex file: sniffer_nrf52840dongle_nrf52840_4.1.1.hex in the folder: c:>.nrfutil>sniffer_software>nrf_sniffer_for_bluetooth_le_4.1.1>hex>sniffer_nrf52840dongle_nrf52840_4.1.1.hex

Then I tried to program this .hex firmware file into my nRF52840 dongle using the following "nrfutil device" command:

nrfutil device program --serial-number DD36ED7EC45A --firmware c:\.nrfutil\sniffer_software\nrf_sniffer_for_bluetooth_le_4.1.1\hex\sniffer_nrf52840dongle_nrf52840_4.1.1.hex

However, I saw the following Error Message:

"ERROR: One or more program tasks failed: *DD36ED7EC45A [sdfu] Firmware file extension .hex is not supported (Argument)"

as shown on the attached screenshot.

What shall I do to program the required sniffer firmware to my nRF52840 dongle?
