After the latest update of the nRF Connect SDK plugin for VS Code (2025.4.106), we've seen this pop-up appear. We are using v1.8.0 and now we are not able to compile unless we go back to version 2025.1.127.
Is there still a way to use

RE: Support for v1.x.x toolchains discontinued

Hi

To get started with the nRF Connect SDK, I strongly recommend that you start out with the DevAcademy nRF Connect SDK fundamentals course available here: https://academy.nordicsemi.com/courses/nrf-connect-sdk-fundamentals/

There is also an intermediate course to continue on when you get familiar with it. Thank you for your feedback though. I will forward this to our user experience team.

Best regards,

The only version of the nRF Connect SDK I have on my system is v3.1.0. I never upgraded to v3.x.x from something else. I just started developing for this microcontroller so that's what I started with since it was the latest release (as of a couple of weeks ago). So, I was quite surprised to see a message like this when starting VS Code after installing the nRF Connect VS Code extension. I went hunting for solutions thinking I had done something wrong, especially since I installed the nRF Connect SDK outside of VS Code then launched VS code then installed the extension, which I thought was the wrong order.

But that's not all, the details of the message also confused me. "If you are working with the nRF Connect SDK V1.x, select the nRF Connect SDK Toolchain v2.0.0 for your configuration". Then the "How to change toolchain" button takes me to this page: https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/nrf-connect-vscode/page/guides/extension_migrate_sdk.html

I follow those instructions and arrive at "Manage SDKs" in the nRF Connection Welcome section of the Sidebar window. I click that and see this:

Those three options don't help me make sense of what's happening. And I know I already have the nRF Connect SDK installed because I already built some example apps on the command line without touching VS Code. So I move on to the next step on the page linked to from "How to change toolchain". The next step says, "Select the build configuration that you want to upgrade to the new SDK version to make it the active build context". I don't know what most of that means. This would be a good place to explain or link to where these terms are defined. I fumble around for a while before I finally configure my project to build and flash all within VS Code. Yet, the message still comes up and it doesn't tell you it's safe to dismiss. I know that now since I found this thread.

The message also seems to pop-up at unexpected times. For example, all I did was close a folder that was not an nRF Connect SDK project folder and saw this message. And the message typically takes several seconds to appear, so you start typing in the IDE or using the IDE then the message appears completely interrupting what you were doing. I didn't immediately click "Ok, do not show again" because I wasn't sure if I did something to my system that was causing a problem.

The point of all this is, things like this are a big source of frustration for new users. Please don't allow this. Simple things like confirming you have the right toolchain for your application, building and running should be frictionless. When you want to something special, that's when users need to do some research.

I appreciate what Nordic has done to get to this point with their tools, and I'm willing to accept some of this is VS Code's fault. But please consider your new users who don't know what's going on in the future.

RE: Support for v1.x.x toolchains discontinued

It is a warning/notification to let users know the currently used version of the VS Code extension does not support toolchain v1.x.x.
As the warning message says, make sure the SDK Toolchain you use is v2.0.0 and see if you're able to compile. If not, you will have to roll back to the older version I'm afraid.
