At least there a rumors, that a LTE-M modem connects to "old LTE base stations", see ESM Error Code 50: type ipv4 only allowed (NRF91 Asset Tracker).

My own experience (Spain): 3 years ago a Thingy:91 LTE-M connected in Spain to Vodafone, but at that time that wasn't rolled out. One topic with that was, that it wasn't able to register PSM. It's not that clear to me, what really happens at that time. Sometimes MNO equip a couple of base-stations with new features without announcing that.

So, does you device get PSM?

Unfortunately, I do not have any feedback on this specific vendor, but indications from GSMA's coverage map indicate that Free does not have coverage in France:

However, this deployment map can be outdated.

Onomondo also has a coverage search, which lists Free as a LTE-M validated network:

(remember to check only LTE-M)

It might be beneficial to ask Free directly if they have LTE CatM1 support in your region/area.

I can't find any information about them and LTE-M (apart from their arrival on the 800 Mhz band in March 25).

Hi,

nRF91-series devices are LTE Cat M1 and NB-IoT capable devices, and does not have 2G (GSM) fallback, nor will it connect to "conventional LTE" networks.

These devices will only connect to LTE M1 or NB-IoT capable networks.

With this configuration:

You are enabling GNSS + LTE Cat M1.
