That can be related to the toolchain variant, as for several SDK releases we have shipped both arm and intel toolchains. (You can see which one you have if you use the Toolchain manager from nRF Connect for Dekstop). In order to maintain compatibility with both variants, you can install the universal J-Link driver pack.

Why does it work with 2.9.1 and not 2.6.1 on the same machine using VS Code and the same nrfConnect flash function/burtton?

Hi,

This line from the error indicate that an incompatible J-Link version is used

[error] [SeggerBackend] - Error in dlopen: dlopen(/Applications/SEGGER/JLink/libjlinkarm.8.dylib, 0x0001): tried: '/Applications/SEGGER/JLink/libjlinkarm.8.dylib' (mach-o file, but is an incompatible architecture (have 'arm64', need 'x86_64')),

Can you uninstall all j-link versions and re-install and make sure you select the univeral variant? That way, it should work regardless of which mac and toolcain variant you have (interl or arm).
