So after your board root was just:

C:\nRF_Ropixon_Boards, and you tried to build, what was the build log?
I created a new board using the VSCode nRF plugin, then added it to the hello world project and compiled successfully. But then I opened the .dts file and, using the graphical editor, I added pins for UART TX and RX. I saved the .dts and tried to compile the project again – and I got exactly that error.
What error? Please share build logs.

Try removing "\boards" from the Board root settings in the nRF Connect for VS Code extension.

As long as the build log says:

BOARD_ROOT element without a 'boards' subdirectory:

it means that it is incorrectly included. But you can also see that the build log says:

- if your board directory is '/foo/bar/boards/my_board' then add '/foo/bar' to BOARD_ROOT, not the entire board directory

So the "/boards" should never be included in the board root.
