Hi cellular_iot , I took a look at the debuggin on Thingy:91X and I found at least one configuration that was wrong in the runner file compared to nRF9151DK.
I just submitted a fix to SDK: https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/pull/23551

I just gave it another try - and this time it behaved as it would start debugging, I even saw it breaking at main() right after hitting "Debug" building, and flashing. But right after it failed and when I tried to re-attach I got this error

Thanks - would be interesting to get an idea, which setups the team members typically use on their own so I could follow that. Unfortunately I've fallen in to many similiar traps the past weeks while I just want to develop a working IoT application.

No news. I have reported this to several departments already. The thing91x team has looked into this, but they have not figured out yet what is causing the debugging error.

I tested this, and the issue reproduces for me as well. I will check internally if this is a known issue.

My reply to your latest qeustion if I've got a 2nd Thingy91X is not working, the forum software is giving me error after error "Error - try again or contact an admin"

But: I've tried a fresh 2nd thingy91X and it shows the exact same issue.

Do you have another thingy91x available? You mentioned that you ordered a couple of thingy91x. Then you can test if it works with the other one.

Also, are you using the same setup in all cases? Like using the same 10 pin cable etc. If you have a another one, you can try that one in case it's broken somehow.

Yes - and the firmware is flashed via JLINK SWD. You can see this in the terminal tab in the 2nd and 3rd image I uploaded - or here again:

Did you set the debug switch to nrf91?

Ok, followed your guidance, deinstalled Jlink V8.44, and installed v8.18. Same issue. I can debug nRF9151DK but not Thingy91X:

The documentation tells you to use v8.18, anything newer is not tested and might not work properly.

Below find my setup of the exact same project, different build configs for Thingy91 and Thingy91X

Working:Thingy91 connected to nRF9151DK port DEBUG OUT. Actions/Debuger/Attach debugger to target/debugger working

Not working:Thingy91X connected to nRF9151DK port DEBUG OUT. Actions/Debuger/Attach debugger to target/Error

In my other ticket "cannot debug Thingy91" Dejan asked me to add "CONFIG_TFM_CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE_MINSIZEREL=y" which fixed the issue on the Thingy91.

Here on the Thingy91X it helps me to resolve the linker error from above - the project builds with debug options.

BUT -

2nd issue The debugger is not starting on any sample on the Thingy91X - after hitting "debug" and west flashed the image I always get a popup: "Unable to start debugging. GDB exitet unexpectedly with exit code -3. Could not connect to targt."

Even the simplest blinky sample can SWD flash but cannot start the debugger:
