I am working with a board (currently embedded inside a clear container I cannot easily take it out of) with an nRF52832-CIAA-R. We were taking photos of it with a strong flash (think umbrella lights and similar, so very high intensity) and it

RE: Possible Damage from camera flash nRF52832-CIAA-R (WLCSP)

Alright, thanks!

I am sorry, but I can't find that we have looked into specific IR-absorbing coatings or blockers that can be used on our WLCSP variants. I can find there are application notes from other vendors on "WLCSP Package Light Sensitivity" and "Methods of Reducing Light Sensitivity in CSP Packages" that seems to be more useful than any recommendations I can give on this specific topic.

Edit: You can also just double check that you have set CONFIG_RESET_ON_FATAL_ERROR=y (just in case it's not related to light sensitivity).

Thank you for the information! I found that the datasheet doesn't supply any specific reccomendations for optical protection; are there any suggested materials or features to look for in one?

So if I understand you correctly there is no permanent damage to the chip, so I dont see any specific reason to transfer this to our QA lab. I suggest you add protection according to the guidelines we have in the datasheet due to light sensitivity, if you have problems afterwards we will of course look into this further. I guess analog performance can also apply to regulators, currents, clocks etc, so I am not terrible surprised it may cause the chip to enter an undefined state either.

Hopefully you are able to make some findings over the SWD interface of the state of the chip. Considering you have not protected the chip I think the best in any case it to make a new revision and check if the problem goes away after adding protection.

Not directly related, but: a good idea can also be that you have some kind of watchdog timer in your application, so in case it get stuck it can reset to recover. Not sure if that would help in this case though.

I read that documentation. Unfortunately, power cycling is not an option in this case, as this board is encased in a capsule we cannot open. We plan to attempt JLINK interfacing today as we have managed to expose those pins.

Will update later.

Is there any other possibility of digital modules being affected? I have heard this happen on other WLCSP packages (for example the Raspberry Pi 2's power module would reset the chip when exposed to flash photography)

As a first step I would likely have tried to power cycle it if possible.

In terms of lightly sensitivity we have this information in the datasheet, not sure it this is something you have already followed?
https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/ps_nrf52832/page/recommended_op_conditions.html#d940e168

My impression about the light sensitivity is that it would affect the analog performance, e.g. that radio or analog performance would be degraded while it was exposed to light, I have not heard it permanently affected the chip after the light was removed.
