&lt;p&gt;The nRF52840 reference layout only concerns the area immediately around the SoC. If you have a look at the layout of the nRF52840 DK, which is downloadable as part of the hardware files found &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-hardware/nRF52840-DK/Download?lang=en#infotabs"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;, you&amp;#39;ll see that there is a &lt;a href="https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/WP_PDF/resource/nwp_008.pdf"&gt;quarter-wave monopole PCB antenna&lt;/a&gt; included. If you choose to use a chip antenna, its datasheet should describe what the layout around it should look like.&lt;/p&gt;
