This is a real newbie for Nordic devices.
I'm testing the usbd-ble-uart with an nRF52840 dongle(PCA10059) as following features.
- Develop under nRF5 SDK version 17.1.1.
- Using soft device 1.4.0
- firmware download with the built-in

RE: software compatibility between nRF52840 dongle & HolyIOT 17120/21017

It works!

There were no soft device in both HolyIOT dongles when delivered as you said.
"Failed with exit code 1. One or more program tasks failed: * ED6CF1F60BA7: Internal sdfu error: Response failure from packet: DfuResponse { opcode: ObjectExecute, result: ExtError, extended_error: SdVersionFailure, response: None } (Generic) Message: Failed, Internal sdfu error: Response failure from packet: DfuResponse { opcode: ObjectExecute, result: ExtError, extended_error: SdVersionFailure, response: None }."
SdVersionFailure means the bootloader rejected the update because the SoftDevice the package requires isn't on the board. I get exactly the same error on nRF52840 dongle, if I write only the application hex while the board has no S140 v7.2.0. If I add s140_nrf52_7.2.0_softdevice.hex (components/softdevice/s140/hex) together with the application hex in the Programmer app, it goes through. Please try that.
