My BLE board with a printed PCB antenna, preferably a meander one, will be housed in a perforated aluminium casing.
Will I be able to communicate with the outside with my board? And if this will cause any problems (range, tuning..), what can

RE: Printed PCB antenna and aluminium housing

Hi,

A antenna fully enclosed in aluminum, even with perforations will have very poor TRP.

For the antenna to have the best opportunity to function properly a opening in the enclosure should be places directly over/next to the antenna. This opening should be fairly large at a minimum the opening should be larger than 1/4 wavelength, ~31mm, but ideally closer to 1/2 wavelength ~62mm.

If your product only needs a short range, just a couple of meters, a smaller opening may work, but without simulating the antenna and the enclosure it is difficult to tell how well it would work.

For the best performance I recommend using a external antenna, as this negates all the issues with the metal enclosure.

Best regards,
