&lt;p&gt;The nRF51 DK has an on board debugger/programmer that can be used to program other chips as long as the debug interface is accessible. The nRF51 dongle does not have any debugger/programmer and can not be used for this purpose. See for example &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/blogs/803/programming-and-debugging-custom-nrf5x-devices/"&gt;this blog post&lt;/a&gt; on how to program custom nRF5x devices.&lt;/p&gt;
