The code for &lt;code&gt;getType()&lt;/code&gt; is &lt;a href="http://androidxref.com/6.0.1_r10/xref/frameworks/base/core/java/android/bluetooth/BluetoothDevice.java#741"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. It eventually ends up &lt;a href="http://androidxref.com/6.0.1_r10/xref/hardware/qcom/bt/msm8992/libbt-vendor/src/hw_ar3k.c#760"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; so Android is just passing on what the hardware says. The method &lt;code&gt;getType()&lt;/code&gt; in &lt;a href="https://developer.android.com/reference/android/bluetooth/BluetoothDevice.html"&gt;BluetoothDevice&lt;/a&gt; returns the type.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not sure why android reports UNKNOWN. I tried with two different devices with the exact same advertising data and flags, one showed &amp;quot;BLE Only&amp;quot; and the other &amp;quot;UNKNOWN&amp;quot;. So I don&amp;#39;t think it has to do with the packet data or flags.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="clear:both;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
