The code for <code>getType()</code> is <a href="http://androidxref.com/6.0.1_r10/xref/frameworks/base/core/java/android/bluetooth/BluetoothDevice.java#741">here</a>. It eventually ends up <a href="http://androidxref.com/6.0.1_r10/xref/hardware/qcom/bt/msm8992/libbt-vendor/src/hw_ar3k.c#760">here</a> so Android is just passing on what the hardware says. The method <code>getType()</code> in <a href="https://developer.android.com/reference/android/bluetooth/BluetoothDevice.html">BluetoothDevice</a> returns the type.</p> <p>Not sure why android reports UNKNOWN. I tried with two different devices with the exact same advertising data and flags, one showed &quot;BLE Only&quot; and the other &quot;UNKNOWN&quot;. So I don&#39;t think it has to do with the packet data or flags.</p><div style="clear:both;"></div>
