I'll have to check SES out, thanks! The documentation for the nRF5 Dev kit gave three options for IDEs, and GCC was the only one listed as working with OSX, so I thought my options were limited. Glad to hear they aren't so much.

To answer your question RK, I tried to build it because I don't know what I'm doing yet, and that's what the directions on gcc's installation guide (https://gcc.gnu.org/install/ ) say to do. But the short answer is that I don't know what I'm doing yet. Your way looks a lot easier than what I was trying too, thank you for helping me out.

And if not GCC (which I also use on a Mac with Xcode), then why not try SES from Segger (www.segger.com/.../embeddedstudio). They have free version (fully functional) for evaluation / educational use.

I work mainly on MAC for all my embedded dev. Try this blog for working with Eclipse & GCC with any ARM Cortext-M.

Get precompiled GCC for OSX here. Extract it into into any folder of your liking then set the path for it in Eclipse preference. As simple as that to get GCC ARM working.

NOTE: Do not use Neon for now. The GNU ARM Eclipse Plugin does not currently work with it. Stick with MARS for the time being.

it's sure at nuts a lot easier than trying to build it yourself!

This was a timely reminder to look through the current list of reported bugs and issues, something I really don't do often enough.

I just thought it would be easier with Homebrew. Homebrew installs itself--you don't actually have to download anything yourself, just run a command. Either way would work!

well you do - you have to download/install homebrew. If you don't want or don't already have homebrew and you just want GCC, you can just download GCC and dump it wherever pleases you. I usually keep a couple of versions around because oddities do sometimes occur.

Either works.

The method I posted uses the launchpad releases, and you don't even have to download anything yourself.

Why are you trying to build it, just download the latest, or a previous released version, they come out every 3 months

Install Homebrew:

Install arm-none-eabi-gcc:

brew cask install gcc-arm-embedded
```

That's it. There's no step 3.
