Thanks, "starting" the non-existing oscillator did the trick! At first my code got stuck in while (!lf_started) loop but that was caused by not enabling the external oscillator early enough.

Now the data looks good again and communication works, Thank you!

Please refer to the updated answer. The external reference should be initialized as if it were an external crystal.
