Happy to help! Yes, one of the devices must run be a peripheral role and one a central. If you use the S130 SoftDevice, then the device can operate as both a central and peripheral at the same time. I recommend taking a look at one of the central examples in our SDK, e.g. the ble_app_hrs_c example (Heart Rate central).

Thanks for the quick answer Bjørn. Could you please confirm if I have understood properly. I have two beacons, one will be programmed with ble_peripheral\ble_app_proximity and the other beacon should be programmed with a ble_central app right? Can two peripheral connect each other? or is it have to be always one peripheral and one central in order to make a connection? What is the suitable application example for the central beacon? Thanks

I would recommend the connection based alternative, i.e. alternative 1, and use the RSSI to estimate the distance between the two beacons.

I recommend taking a look at the proximity application example in our SDK, here is the link to the Infocenter page describing the example.
