&lt;p&gt;yes, you could say that nRF Connect is the successor to Master Control Panel for PC. It does most things that MCP can do, and already does many things MCP does not do, like cross platform and nRF52 support.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and yes, it will be open source.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As for API: nRF Connect uses a library called pc-ble-driver. The library has bindings for python and javascript. It is &lt;a href="https://github.com/NordicSemiconductor/pc-ble-driver"&gt;on github already&lt;/a&gt;, though note that it&amp;#39;s currently quite lightweight on documentation and examples.
