It turned out that the CS pin did not make contact with pin 2 of the SD card in the SD card slot itself. Discovered this by pressing on this pin with the probe of the oscilloscope. initialization now proceeds and I can extend & further integrate this code now.</p><div style="clear:both;"></div>
