This is to specify the address type. You can read more about the different types here: devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../

Why this has to be specified in the hcitool command I'm not sure, it's specific to the hcitool implementation.

Hi Stian,

The error message I was getting was the connection timed out. Adding the --random switch resolved the issue though for me! Would you mind explain to me what this setting does and why it is needed for the nRF softdevice?

So what is the error message you are getting? Did you try to add --random to the hcitool lecc command?
