As SDK 13 is soon to be released, I don't think there will be a new 12.x verison of the SDK. However, I cannot say this for sure at this point. As long as you apply the fix you proposed yourself, it should not be a problem using more than 255 samples. Note that if you move to SDK 13, support for nRF51 devices have been dropped. You will then have to migrate to the nRF52 series, which has a new SAADC peripheral replacing the old ADC from the nRF51 series.

And, just to confirm, there is going to be no new 12.x releases? And editing the SDK loses compliance guarantees? So, I simply can't use more than 255 samples with this version of the SDK and I should just move to v13 of the SDK in the future?

I can do that I guess.
