That's it, reset pin was floating in my case but pulling it up has solved the problem (DISABLEINDEBUG active). Thank you.

Have you verified that the voltage of the board is correct? Make sure that pin P0.21(RESET pin) is not low. Also check the wirings. Have you connected VTref? How does the log with --recover look like compared to the one with --reset ?

There used to be problems with nRF52 recovery but the latest NRFTOOLS and nRFgo Studio should have all fixes. If you are sure there is no problem with SWD wiring then you can try to submit feedback through Nordic's MyPage on their main web site (registration for free), you can submit your firmware and other details so they could reproduce the problem (if it is reproducible on some generic hardware such as nRF5x DK).

Thanks Daniel for your suggestion, I've already tried that command and arguments. I get the following

C:\Program Files (x86)\Nordic Semiconductor\nrf5x\bin>nrfjprog -s 59307651 -f nrf52 --recover

Recovering device. This operation might take 30s.
ERROR: JLinkARM DLL reported an error. Try again. If error condition
ERROR: persists, run the same command again with argument --log, contact Nordic
ERROR: Semiconductor and provide the generated log.log file to them.

I have nRFgo-Studio installed, when I program the board with a valid hex file, I get an error popup stating that it's unable to find or open the JLinkARM dll.

Hi Mark,

As Daniel and Mannu pointed out once you set UICR.APPROTECT register to PALL the nRF52 chip can be recovered (to be available for further SWD programming and debugging) only by complete erase of the chip by so called "recovery" procedure. The easiest way is to use "nrfjprog" command line tool from NRFTOOLS or using nRFgo Studio as they have the command built-in. If you insist on command sequence for SEGGER J-Link then you need to follow answers in this question (and practice search on this forum;).
