Keil will not erase the softdevice, only the application space. You need to use nrfjprog or nRFgo studio to erase the softdevice.

thanks, I will try that later. I did execute an erase command using the Keil IDA seperately before attempting to program the chip. Keil reports the erase being OK. I will get nrfjprog and try that.

Hi,

The proprietary RF examples (ESB and Gazell) does not require a softdevice. Only BLE and ANT examples requires a softdevice present on the board.

If you have flashed a softdevice to your board, you have to erase the chip to get an example not running a softdevice to work. I prefer using theeraseall command of nrfjprog to erase the chip.
