&lt;p&gt;I would recommend that you go through the BLE &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/tutorials/"&gt;tutorials&lt;/a&gt; about &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/tutorials/5"&gt;Advertising&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/tutorials/8"&gt;Services&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/tutorials/17"&gt;Characteristics&lt;/a&gt;, and &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/tutorials/21"&gt;central&lt;/a&gt;. This will give you a great introduction to how to do advertising, create your own service and characteristics, and to scan and connect the peripheral using a central.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In our &lt;a href="http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.sdk5.v13.0.0/index.html?cp=4_0_0"&gt;SDK&lt;/a&gt;, you can also find many examples for both peripheral and central. For reading GPIOs, you should have a look at the &lt;a href="http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.sdk5.v13.0.0/group__nrf__gpio.html?cp=4_0_0_6_8_6"&gt;GPIO abstraction documentation&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
