I (think I) fixed it, by adding the following line to the makefile:

SHELL=cmd.exe

I'm hitting the same problem. Here's the full error:

../../../../../../components/toolchain/gcc/Makefile.common:26: *** Cannot find: "C:\Program Files (x86)\GNU Tools ARM Embedded\6 2017-q1-update/bin/arm-none-eabi-gcc".. Stop. The failing line in the makefile is:

$(if $(shell $(CC) --version),,$(info Cannot find: $(CC).) \
  $(info Please set values in: "$(abspath $(TOOLCHAIN_CONFIG_FILE))") \
  $(info according to the actual configuration of your system.) \
  $(error Cannot continue))

I thought it might be an issue with spaces in the path, but a different location didn't help. Am I missing the shell? When I commented out the lines above, I got a different error:

      0 [main] sh 32748 sync_with_child: child 9328(0x3AF4) died before initialization with status code )xC0000142
   3027 [main] sh 32748 sync_with_child: *** child state waiting for longjmp
/usr/bin/sh: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

I just downloaded the latest GNU toolchain, Version 6-2017-q1-update and I did not have any issues compiling the SDK examples. I have posted the contents of my Makefile.windows below

GNU_INSTALL_ROOT := C:/Program Files (x86)/GNU Tools ARM Embedded/6 2017-q1-update
GNU_VERSION := 6.3.1
GNU_PREFIX := arm-none-eabi

same issue it compiles up to system_nrf52.c then says "Makefile.common:25: *** cannot continue. Stop."

make sure that in your SDK components/toolchain/gcc/makefile.posix, makefile.windows

your installed gcc-arm-none-eabi path and version is correct like this below.

GNU_INSTALL_ROOT := /Users/XXXXXXX/Desktop/gcc-arm-none-eabi-5_4-2016q2

GNU_VERSION := 5.4.2

GNU_PREFIX := arm-none-eabi

Using windows. Not using eclipse this is just the basic step of using make to compile an example via the command line.

hey, did you install GCC ARM Toolchain in your system and also which version of eclipse your using and also which SDK your using. make sure that your gcc tool chain path in your make file is correct.

otherwise, follow this

gnuarmeclipse.github.io/.../

TEMPLATE_PATH = ../../../../../components/toolchain/gcc

ifeq ($(OS),Windows_NT)

include $(TEMPLATE_PATH)/Makefile.windows

else

include $(TEMPLATE_PATH)/Makefile.posix

endif

and also make sure that in your SDK components/toolchain/gcc/makefile.posix

your installed gcc-arm-none-eabi path and version is correct like this below.

GNU_INSTALL_ROOT := /Users/XXXXXXX/Desktop/gcc-arm-none-eabi-5_4-2016q2

GNU_VERSION := 5.4.2

GNU_PREFIX := arm-none-eabi
