You can run a very thin track from those pads, but think there were some pads which were related to the RF section that needed special routing etc

I recall asking a question on this forum, and I thought Nordic's answer was basically nRF52840 requires a 4 layer board and Via in Pad technology, otherwise its not guaranteed to work.

Roger: could you elaborate? The QFN package for the 52840 has two rows of very small pads around the edge? It seems to me that KiCad would let you put a via in the inner row of pads and you could route them on the back of a 2-layer board? Or is the smallest via in KiCad (and say OshPark) smaller than the pads? Might be moot, I use modules for now.

You may also need to consider the physical package of these devices.

Currently the nRF52840 is currently only going to be available in a package which needs via in pad technology, which is not supported by a number of the cheaper CAD packages, or by the cheaper PCB producers.

I think the 52840 is needs a 4 layer PCB, where as I think it's possible to get away with 2 layers on the 52832 etc

we do not have a spreadsheet that compares the nRF52 Series ICs against each other, but the the main differences between the nRF52810 and the nRF52832 are described in this answer.

The main differences between the nRF52840 and the nRF52832 are the following:

Supports 802.15.4
Supports BLE 5 Long Range
Output power increased to +8dBm
Flash increased to 1MB and RAM increased to 256kB.
Number of PWM channels increased from 12 to 16.
Number of UART peripherals increased from 1 to 2
Added 1 x Full-speed 12 Mbps USB controller
Added 1 x Quad SPI interface 32 MHz
Added 1 x High-speed SPI interface 32 MHz
Added ARM Cryptocell CC310 cryptographic accelerator
Extended Supply voltage range from 1.7 V to 5.5 V
Regulated supply for external components up to 25 mA
Up to 48 GPIOs
