Is there any reverse current protection built into the chip or are there any recommendations how to protect the circuit?

I believe a good solution would be to design it so it is physically impossible to insert the battery the wrong way. If that is not possible, the good old reverse voltage protection diode is a simple solution.

The maximum ratings can be found here: http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.nrf52840.ps/abs_max_ratings.html#abs_max_ratings. So going below -0.3V is not good for the chip.
