&lt;li&gt;This depends on which package of the chip you are planning to use. &lt;em&gt;nRF51x22-CxAx Reference Layout 1_3&lt;/em&gt; are for CSP packages and &lt;em&gt;nRF51x22-QFAx Reference Layout 2_4&lt;/em&gt; are for QFN package. Looking at the &lt;a href="http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.nrf51/dita/nrf51/compatibility_matrix/nRF51824_ic_revision_overview.html?cp=3_0_2"&gt;nRF51824 compatibility matrix&lt;/a&gt;, this chip is only available in QFN package.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The &lt;em&gt;BAL-NRF02D3&lt;/em&gt; (BAL-NRF01D3 should be used for QFN packages) is a balun, used for converting signal from balanced to unbalanced. The part also include matching network and harmonics filter. You can read more about baluns in &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/question/77144/how-does-balun-circuit-work/"&gt;this&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/question/6836/regarding-nrf51822-rf-performance/?answer=7158#post-id-7158"&gt;this thread&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Any of the GPIO pins can be used for UART. Please have a look at the &lt;a href="http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.sdk5.v12.3.0/uart_example.html?cp=4_0_2_4_5_40"&gt;UART peripheral example&lt;/a&gt;, and the &lt;a href="http://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/com.nordic.infocenter.sdk5.v12.3.0/ble_sdk_app_nus_eval.html?cp=4_0_2_4_2_2_19"&gt;BLE UART example&lt;/a&gt; in our SDK.&lt;/li&gt;
