Solved the issue - while porting over the working buttonless dfu code from SDK12, I didnt realize I needed to modify BSP LED and Button init routines in SDK13 dfu libraries. As a result, the bootloader was trying to initialize LEDs and Buttons that are not present on the custom board. Once I corrected the gpio init routines. The high current problem has gone away.

I cant understand why DFU can cause increase in the current. Can you help me reproduce this issue?

Using SDK13.0.0 and the PCA10040 with the PPK, I measure ~7.5mA for ble_app_hrs_freertos vs ~0.5mA ble_app_hrs. [EDIT] Never mind, I disable NRF_LOG for freertos and the current drops to ~0.2mA

I know there were some issues with SDK11 and FreeRTOS with DFU but I don't recall the details, nor whether its been resolved. Hopefully someone from Nordic can chime in.
