&lt;p&gt;it is fully possible to add additional services to the bootloader example from the nRF5 SDK. Having a spearate bootloader adds some complexity, but it also provides protection since you can always fall back to the bootloader if any errors occur during an update.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You will also reduce the maximum size of a DFU image as you will have to hold both the old and new image that both include a BL, which will be about 23-25kB.&lt;/p&gt;
