The C232HM SPI cable is a 3.3V cable. The nRF51 data sheet specifies VIO as VDD+0.3 as absolute maximum.

&lt;p&gt;I use ftdi chips (FT232R - USB powered, Vout = 3.3V)  with EK boards and no issues in more than a year.&lt;/p&gt;
