A more recent post here has the answer.

Apparently to use the android app with the light_switch example you must program your boards with the client_proxy and server_proxy code otherwise the phone app. is not able to communicate with them.

I'm still unsure of why a non-Nordic app was able to see the base example client and server units though.

I can confirm that the example code appears to work on the development boards, although it requires the boards to be powered up in a particular order to provision the network correctly and I couldn't get it to work with less than 4 boards.

I still can't see any of the boards when powered using Nordic Android tools.

I was using the regular light switch server.

nRF Connect would eventually see the advertisement and place list it, but not as quickly as a standard BLE device.

I've now acquired another 3 development boards and so will test whether the example code works with one of those acting as provisioner.

Are you using the regular light switch server example or the light switch proxy server example?

I'm not able to see the device in both nRF Connect and nRF Mesh when using light switch server example.
